Identity Theft GlossaryIdentity Theft: a crime in which a criminal obtains key pieces of personal information, such as Social Security or driver's license numbers, in order to pose as someone else. The information can be used to obtain credit, merchandise, and services using the victims’ name. Phishing: sounds like fishing, but what they are doing is “phishing for fools” by email. It is a type of email pretending to be from a legitimate company and designed to steal your valuable personal data, such as credit card numbers, passwords, account data, or other important information that can used to steal your identity.
